It helps to include your macOS version, the Kleave version (shown at the bottom of Settings → General), what you pressed or clicked, and what happened instead.

Common questions

Shortcuts do nothing

Kleave moves windows through a small shortcut in the Shortcuts app, and it needs two things once before it can: permission to use the Shortcuts app, and that shortcut. Open Kleave, and its setup window walks you through both:

  1. Click Allow…, then Allow in the macOS prompt. If you clicked Don't Allow before, turn on the switch under Kleave in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation instead.
  2. Click Add Shortcut…, then Add Shortcut in the Shortcuts app. Rather not add the file? Build it yourself.
  3. The window says Kleave is ready, and the menu bar icon appears.

Kleave says it's ready, but windows still don't move

First check the window itself: no app can move a window that is in macOS full screen, and some system windows can't be moved at all. If no window moves, the Kleave Window Mover shortcut may have been changed. Set it up again:

  1. In the Shortcuts app, delete the Kleave Window Mover shortcut.
  2. Press any of Kleave's key combinations. Kleave finds the shortcut gone and opens its setup window: click Add Shortcut…, or build it again, naming it last.

If that doesn't help, quit Kleave and run this in Terminal to reset its permission to use the Shortcuts app. Then open Kleave and click Allow… again:

tccutil reset AppleEvents com.kenlaam.Kleave

The shortcut never appears after Add Shortcut…

Kleave's setup window stays on its second step when the Shortcuts app didn't add the shortcut. Three things to try, in order:

  1. Click Add Shortcut… again, and in the Shortcuts app click Add Shortcut rather than Cancel. If a shortcut named Kleave Window Mover was already in your library, delete it first: Kleave only uses a copy added during setup.
  2. If the Shortcuts app says the shortcut can't be opened or verified, download the current copy, open it, and click Add Shortcut. Keep Kleave's setup window open while you do, so it picks the shortcut up.
  3. Or build the shortcut yourself. If none of this works, write to [email protected].

One shortcut doesn't work

Another app, or macOS itself, may already use that key combination — often another window manager, which is best quit while Kleave runs. Open Settings → Shortcuts and record a different combination. Restore Default Shortcuts… puts every shortcut back.

The menu bar icon is missing

The icon shows only while Kleave is set up and ready. If it's gone, open Kleave from Applications or Spotlight: if setup isn't finished, or the Kleave Window Mover shortcut was deleted, the setup window opens and shows what's left to do. If you turned off Show in menu bar, shortcuts keep working; opening Kleave again brings up Settings. On a Mac with a notch, a crowded menu bar can also hide icons behind it.

A window doesn't fill the whole area

Some apps set a minimum or maximum size for their windows, and Kleave can't size a window past those limits. The window is placed as close to the target as the app allows.

Uninstalling Kleave

Choose Quit Kleave from its menu, drag Kleave from Applications to the Trash, and delete the Kleave Window Mover shortcut in the Shortcuts app. If the menu bar icon is hidden, open Kleave again to bring up its window and press ⌘Q. You can also remove it from Login Items in System Settings. Where its one settings file lives is described in the Privacy Policy.
